After the crisis

In order to understand the financial crisis, and more importantly, how to move beyond the crisis, director of SimCorp StrategyLab, Professor Ingo Walter of Stern School of Business in New York, presented a macro view of the global asset management industry, including an outline of the industry’s development over the past 50 years in US and Europe.

As keynote speaker at the event, Ingo Walter’s extensive experience allowed him to capture the audience’s attention with an impressive presentation that included hard facts, anecdotes, academic research and valuable insight into the long-term solutions to the current financial situation.

Among other things, Professor Walter discussed aspects of scale and scope in the asset management industry and argued that there is no credible evidence that bigger is in fact better. Though organisations can gain scale economies and operating efficiency through technology, the flipside may be complexity and bureaucracy. Looking to the future, Professor Walter said that winners and losers in the global asset management industry will be separated by capital strength, a strong global brand, structured risk management, and, not least, qualified and motivated staff.
